Bushmeat

Inspired by the bushmeat trade Jacha created these two photographs to raise awareness

Bushmeat is defined as any terrestrial mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians harvested for food.Very often animals such as Mandrills and Crocodiles are captured and tied up for days before being killed and sold. It’s unimaginable to think of the trauma and distress these animals go through before they are killed.Bushmeat, especially the meat of chimpanzees and gorillas is considered a delicacy and the high prices that the meat commands means that the hunting is not stopping, even though it is illegal.Ape Action Africa work with the local communities surrounding their sanctuary in Cameroon to educate the local people about bushmeat, logging, conservation and other environmental issues. As with the dancing monkey print, Jacha created these bushmeat prints in collaboration with photographer Cristian Barnett, the nakedness of the model represents the vulnerability and innocence of the animals killed in the bushmeat trade.

You can see these two photographs alongside Jacha’s Indonesian Dancing Monkey piece in the Platform Galeri.
