Gorilla trekking in Kahuzi – Biéga National Park

Next stop for Jacha and Gwyn on their Congo trip was the national park to look for gorillas.

After a magical few days at Lwiro Primate Rehabilitation Centre, Jacha, Gwyn and Shannon moved on to the Kahuzi – Biéga National Park, the home of the Grauer’s Gorillas.

Kahuzi – Biéga National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 and is one of the best places in the world to see gorillas.

Jacha and Gwyn had a fantastic time trekking with the rangers in the hope of seeing gorillas in their natural habitat – and they weren’t disappointed! They were privileged to encounter three different family groups of the Grauer’s gorilla (or eastern lowland gorilla). These gorillas are listed as critically endangered, it is estimated that there are less than 4000 left.

As with the chimps at Lwiro, Jacha got some breath-taking shots of these magnificent creatures, some of which will be on display at the Platform Galeri very soon.
